OLD MAGAZINES
We went to the storage shed on Saturday and brought back a pile of old magazines to go through and/or toss. There are lots of BH&G, and holiday issues of LHJ, MC, RB going back to the 70's. I want to keep only the craft and/or recipe parts. We also brought back some old craft kits I had gotten at a garage sale, all from a monthly "club" in the 60's and 70's. Also, some Saturday Reviews from the mid-60's--very strange to go through, seeing what was popular and topical then (and the ads!). I'm ripping out the acrostics and any other puzzles. Anyone want old computer mags, like Run?

We also brought back the small practice xylophone (PR's). I might want to learn how to play a bit.

KARL BACK AT WORK
Karl was released yesterday evening and went straight to work(!). He says his shoulder (left) and leg hurt, but nothing is broken. He had a CAT scan and his head seems to be OK, not even a bump, he says. He thinks it will be difficult to lift things for a bit, though. Call him for more information if you have his number--just not too early.

KARL IN ACCIDENT
Karl called at 10:30 last night to say he had been hit by a car earlier on his way to work and had been admitted to Illinois Masonic Hospital. His injuries seemed to be relatively minor--he said his arm and leg hurt. He had, however, hit his head on the windshield of the car and had blacked out at some point, so they were keeping him overnight for observation. He said it no longer hurt, but they were being cautious. He had an IV and could have nothing by mouth--and a whole night without cigarettes (!). No word yet today. Hopefully the offending vehicle--a dealer car being driven between dealerships--had a lot of insurance since Karl has none.

RETURNED FROM TRIP
We got back from our 16 day trip out west and back on Sunday. It was great seeing all the kids--and how they have grown! We also got to see Will's new condo--very nice.

I can't post any pictures right now because there seems to be a virus on our computer--Win32?--and the Shareware can't find the camera (!!) Now I'm reluctant to go online at all at home. Hopefully, we can solve this problem soon.

Today is my mom's 88th birthday. So yesterday, she invited several of us over for dinner. Because Jeannie was singing with her group at Friendship Village earlier in the afternoon, we had to eat at the evening service--we ended up being the last table served. Because our group was large (originally 12, but only 10 came), we were set up at a long table outside the restaurant proper in the big entry hall. We went down a bit after 6, still waiting for Nancy and Marce to arrive; they came c.15 minutes later (some of which time they had spent trying to find a parking spot). Others present were my parents, Rudy, me, Jeanne, Joy, [info]xirpha, and Pat. John was at a (probably very soggy) Civil War Reenactment and Mike was not feeling well, then had to tutor someone.

Dinner was delicious (mostly). We chose from prime rib (excellent), sole, and ham, baked potatoes or potato pancakes, carrots or broccoli (I had both), several salad types, clam chowder or lentil/bacon soup (I didn't have either). Dessert was either chocolate cream pie or cherry cobbler with ice cream. I had the cobbler, but (mine at least) was dried out and scorched on the bottom--apparently it had been sitting around a while. Over all, delicious meal.

By the time we went back upstairs, the Apprentice was on, so we watched it together (2 episodes), commenting during commercial breaks. We went home right after it was over.

EASTER AT KATHY'S
Rudy and I went to his sister Kathy's (in Crystal Lake) for dinner today. We brought Karl--I picked him up at the Palatine station after Mass--and got there just after 3. Yvonne and Fabien arrived a bit later and we ate just after 4 (Kathy's son, Glenn, was also there). We had Turkey Tetrazzini, citrus salad, hot Italian Bread, and Yvonne brought her Grated Carrot-Raisin Salad. I made dessert--from-scratch Angel Food Cake (it actually cost less to buy a dozen eggs than to buy a mix!), brownies, and frosted sugar cookies. We sat at the dining room table and talked until after 7. Then we had to leave to take Karl in to work. It took over 2 hours to get to State and Division (he was 45 minutes late, but he had said he might be and it was ok). It took us less than half an hour to get home.

I made Panettone for breakfast to eat with the Easter eggs--I only made 6. I set out what candy we had--and didn't eat a single piece, not even a Peep. I don't think that has ever happened before.

WATER HEATER
Yesterday afternoon, I was sitting in the kitchen crocheting before leaving for work and it was very, very quiet--furnace not blowing, refrigerator not humming, no radio or TV, Rudy had just left--and I could hear a faint drip every 10 seconds or so. It seemed to be originating from behind the faux-louvered doors that conceal the tiny alcove containing the furnace and the water heater (that holds 40-60 gallons and has worked very well in the three years we have lived here). Yep. The drip was from the water heater and there was water on the concrete floor, maybe a quarter of an inch deep covering half the floor (obviously not a long duration so far). It was still below the tiled kitchen floor, so if I hadn't heard the drip we would have been unaware of a problem for a long time.

Anyway, I called our landlord's office and he authorized calling his recommended plumber company. I called, but I was leaving for work in just a few minutes, so he had to come this afternoon. Two young men came today, took one look, and called the landlord to say the water heater--dated 1992--was unfixable (can't patch rusted spots on water heaters, I guess). So they spent a couple of hours putting in a new water heater, discovering a disconnected pipe in the wall behind the dryer in the process, and reconnecting everything. I've yet to use any hot water. We'll see later.

NANCY HOME
Nancy went home on Friday. I called yesterday, and Jeannie answered as Nancy was not available to talk. J. says she is doing fine. She has an incision in her back, above the waist, I think, that is only bandaged, no stitches or staples. She just has to be careful not to get it wet. That's all I know so far.

NANCY DOING WELL
According to my mother, Nancy came through the surgery ok. They stayed till late in the day and at that time she was still dropping off to sleep a lot. Apparently there were three stones, one of which was pressing on a potentially dangerous area. All particles were supposedly removed, but they will be checking x-rays to be sure. Jeannie will bring her home on Friday, I guess.

MOM UP & ABOUT
I talked to my Mom this morning and she's doing fine and watching C-Span. She doesn't have to stay lying down and doesn't have to wear an eye-patch (though she can). However, she can't see out of that eye at this time. She said it will take 3 months to heal.

MOM RESTING
When I called my folks last night around 8 no one answered and I left a message, but no return call. I called this morning and my Dad answered (he said he accidently erased the message). Apparently my Mom DID go to the hospital last night for an "operation" on her eye. As I understand it, a "gas bubble" is inserted to hold the retina in place until it reattaches itself. The earlier in-office attempt was not working, hence the hospital visit. She is at home in bed and on medication. That's all I know so far.

Here's an article about it.

MOM'S EYE
When I talked to my mother today, she said they are waiting for "gas bubbles" in her eye to dissipate. She is supposed to lie down "with her nose to the mattress"--the side opposite the injured (right) eye--to allow for drainage. And, she is to only look "at the floor". She has another appointment tomorrow at 4.

RETINA PROBLEMS
Wednesday my mother apparently sneezed--"the biggest sneeze ever"--and did something to her eye. She said she could see fine, but if she closed her eyes there was a black spot in a corner. Also, it was leaking fluid. Today she went to an eye doctor who diagnosed "detached retina" and sent her to a specialist. That doctor was very busy. She got there at 11 a.m., and didn't see the doctor until after 5. They performed some procedure and she goes back tomorrow. Right now she is wearing a patch (she declined a pirate hat) and can only look down. Apparently sneezing is a common cause of this problem.
